The researchers analyzed data on cardiac parameters associated with diagnosed OSA and snoring that was self-reported using data from UK Biobank.

United Biobank is an international open source for researchers to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Data came from 4,877 participants who received an MRI scan of the heart. The scientists divided them into three groups: those who were OSA, those who snored those who reported themselves and those who didn't.

When comparing the snoring group with the sleepless group, the researchers found remarkable differences in left ventricular mass in women compared to men.

Increased left ventricular mass means the heart has to work harder to meet the body's needs.

These patterns in people who snore alone may be an indication of an undiagnosed OSA.

"We found that women's heart parameters appeared to be more likely to be affected by this disease, and that women who snore or suffer from OSA were at greater risk for heart attack."
