Buttermilk with apple cider vinegar - This is a very simple process! First, fill the liquid measuring cup with a glass of milk. Then add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice and stir. Finally, let the mixture sit for 10 minutes until it thickens and tears.
You can use white wine vinegar (my personal choice) or apple cider vinegar instead of buttermilk. Well, there are some buttermilk substitutes besides the milk-vinegar or lemon juice mixture listed below. These other substitutes are tartar cream, sour cream, natural yogurt and even soy milk instead of vegan butter milk!
Tartar Cream - Simply shake 1 glass of milk with 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar. Let the mixture rest for about 10 minutes at room temperature or until the milk becomes thicker.
Sour Cream - Whip 3/4 cup sour cream and 1/4 cup milk to thin the mixture. Then use a mixture like butterflies.
Yogurt - To thin the mixture, shake 3/4 cup of yogurt (all except fat) and 1/4 cup of milk. Then use a mixture like butterflies.
You can even make vegetarian or vegan buttermilk! Just use soy milk or almond milk instead of regular milk!
